Turkey emphasizes collaboration, inclusivity in its bid to host COP31

(MENAFN) Türkiye is promoting cooperation and inclusiveness in its bid to host and chair the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), scheduled for 2026, according to diplomatic sources.

Türkiye and Australia are the two candidate countries for hosting the conference. Discussions between Ankara and Canberra during the 80th UN General Assembly initially established a framework of mutual understanding, including proposals for co-chairing the presidency, jointly hosting high-level meetings, and coordinating negotiation processes.

However, sources said a letter from Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan rejected earlier agreements, citing UN procedural rules and concerns that a co-chairing model might shift COP’s focus away from Pacific issues. Türkiye, meanwhile, views co-chairing as a model for strengthening multilateralism, a point Erdoğan emphasized in his reply.

Diplomatic sources noted that Ankara is prepared to host COP31 independently if consensus cannot be reached. Türkiye has stressed that the conference should not focus on a single region but rather prioritize the most vulnerable areas affected by climate change, while accommodating special sessions for the Pacific within this broader framework.

Türkiye’s bid highlights cooperation and inclusivity, framing COP31 as a global platform for solidarity and shared responsibility. Ankara plans to continue advancing the process through constructive dialogue and mutual respect.

If no agreement on the host country is reached, procedural rules dictate that the conference will take place in Bonn, Germany, where the UNFCCC Secretariat is based.

The UNFCCC, opened for signature at the 1992 Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit and entering into force in 1994, is the first major international framework addressing climate change. Türkiye joined the convention in 2004, and the COP serves as its highest decision-making body, meeting annually to adopt consensus-based decisions.
